Celebrate Abraham Lincoln

from Mekeel’s & Stamps, submitted by Joel Johnson

The Lincoln Stamp Club is pulling out all the stops to celebrate the bicentennial of its namesake. This includes a cacheted First Day of sale cover, Birthday cover and two LINPEX Stamp Show covers.

When the U.S. Postal Service issues its four new Lincoln stamps on Feb. 9, the Lincoln post office and the Lincoln Stamp Club are holding a First Day of Sale Ceremony hosted by Nebraska Governor Dave Heineman in the Rotunda in the Nebraska State Capital at 10:00 a.m. Lincoln, Nebraska, is the largest city in the world named for Abraham Lincoln. Chris Beutler, the Mayor of Lincoln, has declared Feb. 11–15 as “Celebrate Abraham Lincoln Days in Lincoln,” with many events planned, including displays of Lincoln related art at various museums, family events, movies about Lincoln, a family event at Lincoln Southwest High School on Feb. 14, Pulitzer Prize winner Doris Kearns Goodwin hosting a seminar on Lincoln at the Lied Center on Feb. 15, and many more activities and events.

The Lincoln Stamp Club is having its annual show, LINPEX, Feb. 21-22, with “Celebrate Abraham Lincoln” as the theme. The show will be held at the University Place Inn at 5250 Comhusker Highway in Lincoln. The show will have dealers buying and selling stamps, competitively judged exhibits, a USPS substation, free appraisals of stamp collections and a kids table with stamps selling for a penny each. Admission is free. Hours are Saturday 10 a.m.–6 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m.–4 p.m.

On Feb. 9, at the First Day of Sale ceremony, the governor will be presenting a proclamation declaring Feb. 9–22 as “Celebrate Abraham Lincoln Days for all Nebraska Residents.”

The Lincoln Stamp Club and the U.S. Postal Service are preparing four special covers (envelopes) for these dates in February. They are as follows:

  1. First Day of Sale of four new Abraham Lincoln Stamps Feb. 9 (Lincoln as rail-splitter, lawyer, politician and president.)
  2. Lincoln’s 200th Birthday Feb. 12
  3. LINPEX cover for Feb. 21
  4. LINPEX cover for Feb. 22

Abraham Lincoln, Politician.

The first two will be available at “Celebrate Lincoln” events Feb. 11-15. All four covers will be available at the LINPEX stamp show Feb. 21 and 22. Each cover will include a brief biography of Abraham Lincoln and a short history of how the City of Lincoln got its name. The inserts have been written by historian Jim McKee. The covers will sell for $2.00 each with one stamp and $4.00 each with all four stamps. Each cover will have a special pictorial cancel and special cachet (picture). Covers can be purchased at Celebrate Lincoln events, the LINPEX stamp show or by mail. Mail orders should include payment and a self-addressed stamped #10 envelope. The mailing address is:

The first day and birthday covers will have the same cancel (a picture of Abraham Lincoln) and cachet for both the First Day of Sale and for Lincoln’s birthday, with only the date being different.
